Cardboard, especially corrugated cardboard, was first patented in 1871 by Albert Williams of The Big Apple. Jackson used it for wrapping bottles and glass lantern chimneys. The corrugated package, as you may know it these days, was designed by Robert Gair, who created a equipment to generate large volumes of boxes. This innovation labeled the start of volume production and extensive usage of cardboard boxes.
